Bollywood royalty Asha Bhosle joined Corrie stars Shobna Gulati and Jimmi Harkishin at the launch of her Indian restaurant Asha’s.
The singing sensation, 82, who is the most recorded artist in music history, flew in from her home in Mumbai for the £2m Peter Street eatery’s lavish launch party last night.
Welcoming guests, who also included My Big Fat Asian Wedding star Raj Somaiya and BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Phil Williams, she told the crowd “my house is your house”, before presenting the chef with a spice box containing a secret mix made by her master grinder in Mumbai.
Guests feasted on canapes including tandoori king prawns, seafood seekh kebabs and aloo mattar ki tikki (spiced potato and pea patties), washed down with cocktails created by Manchester mixology maestro Jamie Jones.
In an interview earlier in the day, Asha told the MEN: “I want to give people a taste of home, a taste of India and of course I want to cater to the diverse community of this city, from Bangladeshi, Pakistani, India to the indigenous community.
“We will be serving authentic food, the kind of dishes that I cook at home and what can be found on the streets of India.”
L'Oréal Blackett gets a brimful of Manchester's palatial new Indian restaurant
WHEN '90s indie rockers Cornershop found muse in a Bollywood Actress, Asha Bhosle, for their 1998 hit Brimful of Asha, they failed to mention that the singer - the most recorded musician in the world - is a very keen cook.
Asha Bhoshe's Bollywood legend and kitchen prowess also provided inspiration for international high-end Indian chain Asha’s - owned by the prolific UAE restaurant group ARIL - which first opened in Dubai thirteen years ago and now has ten restaurants across the Middle East and one in Birmingham.
Asha's Manchester - fronted by Peter Warden (formerly of Individual Restaurants: RBG and Piccolino) - is the latest to join the acclaimed chain, which has featured in the Michelin Guide eight times, no less.
Having been over a year in the offing, there's high expectations surrounding Asha's, which has seen the mid-nineteenth century Grade II listed building on the corner of Peter Street and Mount Street (opposite the Midland) on the receiving end of a £2m revamp.
Sultrily lit with boudoir-style drapings, they've showered the build in gold finishings, deep okra's (purple when it's at home) and handmade gold 'battered' light fixtures which apparently took over two months to make. There's enough gold here to make Goldie jealous, and while Asha's is, with all intention, palatial, the venue somehow manages to avoid ostentation. Just.
It's big too. Spread across two floors and over 6000 sq ft, Asha's features a 100-cover restaurant and a dedicated 'Bolli Bar', which, incidentally, has nothing to do with thatBolly

Asha Bhosle has been declared the greatest Bollywood playback singer of all time by UK based Eastern Eye newspaper.
The legendary singer beat off tough competition from the past 85 years including elder sister Lata Mangeshkar in a first of its kind list that takes into account factors including number of songs, honours, international impact, versatility, fan base and popularity amongst fellow music industry professionals.
The evergreen 81-year-old was taken by surprise with the news of her topping the list.
“I thought being called the greatest was the prerogative of boxer Muhammad Ali. I thank Eastern Eye and everyone for tolerating me all these years,” said Asha.
Whilst Lata Mangeshkar came second in the list of talented singers, Mohd Rafi came third and Kishore Kumar was fourth. Other names who featured in the top 20 included Mukesh (5), current Bollywood music queen Shreya Ghoshal (7), Geeta Dutt (10), Sonu Nigam (14), Kumar Sanu (17) and Kavita Krishnamurthy (19).
Eastern Eye entertainment editor Asjad Nazir, who compiled the list thinks Asha was a deserved choice to top the list.
“Apart from being the most prolific singer the world has ever known, Asha’s versatility has given her the widest body of work. An incredible career stretching across eight decades has seen the record-breaking singer take Bollywood music across new frontiers and with Brimful Of Asha had a globally successful chart-topping song dedicated to her,” said Asjad.
UK based singer Rita Morar who voted for Asha Bhosle to top the list described her as a phenomenon for what she has shared with the world musically.
“Not only has she shown her versatility through songs like Piya Tu, Duniya Mein, Jaiye Aap Kaha and Dil Cheez Kya Hai, she has broken barriers of music genres and kept her power of emotion and energy in her music. That to me as an female artist is pure inspiration and encouraging,” said Rita Morar.
Rapper Swami Baracus said that Lata Mangeshkar had the bigger status, but Asha has been the greater singer.
“The diverse range in Asha-ji’s voice gives her the vocal edge, but what really sets her apart is her versatility. High-profile International collaborations including Boy George, REM's Michael Stipe, Kronos Quartet and even Australian cricketer Brett Lee have showcased her global appeal. Stepping outside of your comfort zone is something I've always adhered to musically, and Ashaji has been a true component of that on a global scale,” said Swami Baracus.
The full list of the greatest 20 Bollywood playback singers is published in Eastern Eye newspaper on June 26, 2015.

The ARIL Group has confirmed the opening of its first Asha’s restaurant in Manchester in September, when the launch will be graced by the legendary Bollywood singing star Asha Bhosle.
The Asha’s menus will offer a delicious array of Modern Indian Cuisine paired with an exciting, modern cocktail menu and carefully selected wine list.
The multi-award-winning Indian singer is the inspiration behind the restaurant group, with many of the dishes originating from her own recipes. Asha will attend the opening to meet fans and road test the menu.
The project cost is just under £2m. The venue in the elegant Victorian building at 47 Peter St, Manchester, facing the Theatre Royale, comprises 6000 sq. ft over two floors.
The upper ground floor is the 100-cover restaurant and the lower ground floor will host the cocktail bar for 70 and a private dining space.
Herself a noted cook, Asha opened her first restaurant at Wafi City, Dubai in 2002, and the brand is now dotted all over the Middle East as well as a highly successful restaurant in Birmingham that amongst numerous awards and accolades, has been recommended in the coveted Michelin Guide since 2009.
Peter Warden, well-known in Manchester for his key role in the opening management teams of successful and stylish venues including Restaurant Bar and Grill in Manchester, Alderley Edge and Liverpool, and Piccolino in Manchester and Hale, returns to the city after three years with the ARIL Group, for whom he has been instrumental in opening of more than 20 venues across the Middle East including restaurants in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Qatar.
Peter, now ARIL Group General Manager, says: “We are tremendously excited about our new upcoming cocktail bar and restaurant in Manchester. This will be our tenth Asha’s around the world and for the Manchester venue we have taken a major leap forward in the evolution of the brand. I am sure that the good people of Manchester will be delighted with the fantastic décor, delicious drinks and amazing award winning food that they will be able to enjoy when we open in September.
“One of the reasons that we selected Manchester for our new Restaurant and Cocktail Bar is due to the very vibrant cocktail scene which is on par with the likes of London and our home town Dubai. We have always had an exciting and innovative cocktail offering and to ensure that we can deliver the very best to the experienced drinkers of Manchester we have engaged the skills and services of world class cocktail consultants such as Marian Blake from the Nightjar in London (top three cocktail bars in the world) and Jamie Jones who is the current reigning ‘World’s Best Gin Bartender.’
“We have also worked with our wine experts to develop a list that is specifically designed for Manchester's tastes and preferences. Having made a major investment into understanding what the regional taste profiles are, they are well placed to help us match our award-winning cuisine to a wonderful wine list developed to delight Manchester's discerning clientele.”
